In 1866, the city of Paris bought the hotel de Carnavalet to shelter the decorations of the buildings destroyed by Haussman. The works of art, the documents show the development of Paris, the events that occurred there, and its great history figures. The painted ceilings, the furniture, the objects illustrate the evolution of the Parisian dwelling since the 16th century. The first rooms show the Paris of the origins and of the Middle Ages through objects found in the excavations during the constructions. Paintings representing the Paris of the Renaissance.
Since 1989, the museum expended to the hotel Le Peletier de Saint-Fargeau, which proposes the furniture and some paintings from the 19th century and collections of paintings from the 20th century.

On the ground floor, the apartments have preserved the exuberant baroque decoration achieved by Boffrand in 1740. On the first floor, the chapel is the former chapel of the hôtel de Clisson. Actually, when the architect Delamair built in 1708 the new hôtel de Soubise, he integrated what was remaining from the old hotels de Clisson (around 1375) and de Guise (16th century). |
