The origin of the name comes from the fact that Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, marchioness of Sévigné (1626-1696), whose letters made her famous, lived from 1677 till her death, in the hôtel Carnavalet situated in this street and now occupied by the Museum of the History of Paris.
It existed in the XVIth century under the name of Culture-Sainte Catherine.
The current name of this street only dates from 1867.
It is 386 m long and 10 m large.
