Paris 3e

The current name of this square dates from 1800. It was earned in honor of the department that had been the first to pay off its contributions to the State.

The Place des Vosges square is 140 m long and 140 m large.

The demolition of the 'hotel des Tournelles, on the north side of the place, was done between 1565 and 1604. Henri IV then decides the construction of the place Royale, finished in 1612. In 1639, Richelieu raised there a riding statue of Louis XIII, melted down by the Revolution and replaced, in 1818, by the actual statue. No garden before 1650. Arched galleries stones and bricks in the north part, the rest plaster under ceilings " à française except for the pavilion du Roi.

The galleries are not of public domain; they remain property of every resident.

It is usually given one or several names to each mansion because after almost 400 years, the owners or tenants have been rather numerous.
