The History
In the VIIth century, in 630, Saint-Eloi Minister and Superintendent of Finance of Dagobert the 1st, founds a monastery of women dedicated to Saint-Martial in the Ile de la Cité. Three hundred cloistered nuns permanently live there. In 635, he builds on the borderline of the swamps, on the right bank, a basilica dedicated to Saint Paul-de-Tébaïde. This edifice will be at the origin of the Village Saint-Paul des Champs. After the construction of the ramparts, Philippe Auguste (1190-1209), the Village Saint-Paul will be named apart from the walls. Chosen by Charles V as residence place in 1360, the Village Saint Paul will become the parish of the kings of France from 1361 to 1559. |
